10 Things to Know Before You Test Drive the All-New 2015 VW Golf TDI

The seventh-generation VW Golf went on sale across the United States last month, marking 40 years since Volkswagen’s iconic hatchback debuted in the country. Here is what you need to know about the all-new model:

1.)  This is the first time the entire Golf lineup will feature powerful and efficient turbocharged engines. The TDI has an available 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinderTDI® Clean Diesel engine that produces 150 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque while getting an estimated 31 mpg city and 35 mpg in combination driving. Each vehicle is fitted with a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission.

2.)  28% of the Golf’s steel body and chassis is made up of high-strength steel not available for previous models resulting in a body that is 51 pounds lighter than the previous model and 10% more torsionally rigid.

3.)  Legroom, shoulder room, elbow room, and cargo space have all increased over the outgoing model. Cargo capacity with the rear seats up is more than the largest mid-size sedan.

2015 Volkswagen Gold TDI4.)  The standard 5.8 inch infotainment screen utilizes a capacitive touch sensor (similar to the technology used in smartphones and tablets) as opposed to the more common resistive touchscreens that require pressure. The touch technology allows for swiping and pinch-zooming. The screen also has a proximity sensor that senses when a hand is close and switches to a more finger-friendly layout.

5.)  Bluetooth® connectivity, a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® integration, and SiriusXM® Satellite Radio are all standard in the all-new TDI.

6.)  Volkswagen’s XDS Cross Differential System is standard on all Golfs.  This system acts as an electronic limited-slip differential which senses if the suspension becomes unloaded and applies braking to the inside wheel to reduce understeer.

7.)  Automatic Post-Collision Braking is also standard. Once the Golf’s airbag sensors detect a primary collision braking is automatically applied to help reduce residual kinetic energy and the chance of additional damage.

8.)  All 2015 Golfs come with a standard 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain limited warranty and 3 year/36,000 mile new vehicle limited warranty.

9.)  Both the Golf TDI and the TSI come with a standard 1 year/1,000 mile Carefree Maintenance Program that covers all scheduled maintenance for this period at no extra charge.

10.)  Pricing starts at just $17,995- $3,000 less than the outgoing model.
