20% of Vehicles Remain Unrepaired After Recall

2014 marked a record year for recalls with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) issuing 803 vehicle recalls involving 63.9 million vehicles, including two of the ten largest vehicle recalls in history.

“Recalls are only successful and can only save lives if they end up getting the cars fixed, but we know that 20 percent of vehicles that are recalled – and possibly more than that – go unrepaired,” said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “This is a safety risk to the drivers of those vehicles and all the people they share they share the road with, too.”

United States vehicle owners are encouraged to search their vehicle’s VIN number (located on your vehicle and on your vehicle registration) using the NHTSA’s VIN look up to see if your vehicle has an outstanding recall. Residents can also download the Safercar Mobile App for Apple or Android devices and opt-in to receive recall alerts by email.
