Genesis’ G90 is a Grand Saloon with Hyundai Design Details
Last year, Hyundai announced they were spinning off Genesis into a luxury brand a la Toyota and Lexus. Now, the automaker has debuted its first purely Genesis vehicle, a grand saloon dubbed the G90.
Featuring a body style steeped in Genesis’ “Athletic Elegance” design identity, the G90 is a step in the right direction in defining the luxury brand. It’s fascia is strong and muscular with the only blemish being the large sensor on the front grille. Strong lines run from front to back giving the G90 folds reminiscent of a Rolls-Royce. The front bumper features the G90’s smile, a feature less visually staggering in person.
Inside the cabin, the G90 achieves a feeling of premium soft-touch materials that feel similar to Lexus’ NuLuxe while the layout of drivers controls is straight from Hyundai’s design aesthetic though upgraded craftsmanship is evident.
Inside the G90, driver and passengers will be comfortable thanks to an abundant 46.3 inches of legroom and generously apportioned seating capped off by a electronically-controlled, 22-way power driver’s seat. According to Hyundai, the G90 passenger seat, “offers 16-way adjustment for optimal comfort. All front seat positions, side mirrors and steering column position are controlled by an integrated memory system. Front seat positions offer both heating and ventilation.”
Under the hood the G90 is fitted with a choice of two gasoline engines: a 3.3-liter direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 engine offering an estimated 365 horsepower, or the 5.0-liter direct-injected V8 engine that comes with a roaring 420 horsepower.
The G90’s driving experience came together thanks to engineering at Hyundai’s European Test Centre, based at Germany’s Nürburgring and environmental testing at the automaker’s Namyang R&D Center and California Proving Grounds in the Mojave Desert.
Safety technology was also freshly engineered with the latest innovations and is expected to achieve NHTSA’s 5-star safety rating and IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ rating. Much of the safety technology is centered on the car’s 12.3-inch widescreen in the center stack where the driver can see images from a 1 MP digital camera that is activated when parking and a high-resolution 360-degree Multi-view monitor with steering guidelines. Genesis offers a heads-up display and the drivers can view additional drivers screen information via a seven-inch high-resolution TFT-LCD display.
Audio is presented in a concert-like experience via the Lexicon Premium Sound System, consisting of 17 speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer. The G90’s aluminum Lexicon audio speaker grilles are a thing of beauty.
For use in inclement weather, the G90 offers drivers the convenience of a windshield wiper de-icer, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-defogging windshield.
Additionally, convenience features such as a segment-first cabin CO2-level sensor and Air Quality System, Qi wireless-charging, front and rear USB ports, proximity key with an integrated push-button start system, standard power rear- and rear-side-window sunshades, power Smart Trunk and power door closure round out the G90’s luxury appointments.
